Frequently asked questions
What does sigma control?
Sigma controls the radius of the sharpening effect. Lower values (0.5–1.0) apply subtle, fine-grained sharpening. Higher values (1.5–3.0) apply stronger sharpening with wider edge enhancement. Start at 1.0 and increase if needed.
Can sharpening fix a blurry photo?
Sharpening improves edge contrast and perceived crispness, but cannot recover information lost in a heavily blurred or out-of-focus image. It works best on images that are only slightly soft.
Should I sharpen before or after resizing?
Sharpen after resizing. Downscaling an image can soften edges, so applying sharpening as a final step restores the detail lost during compression.
Does sharpening increase file size?
Slightly — sharpening increases edge contrast, which adds complexity to the image data and can modestly increase file size. The effect is usually less than 5–10%.
